This is a quite remarkable bio of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. One remarkable aspect is the mere size of the book--nearly 700 pages of text and notes. And this is important, because the author can go into very extensive detail on whatever facet of RBG's life is under examination. So often books on the Justice zip through her important cases as a litigator in an almost superficial manner. Not here; the author analyzes what gave rise to each case, what Ginsburg's strategy was, how she designed her briefs and oral arguments, and how the Justices reacted to her presentations. It is almost like looking over her shoulder as the cases unfold.In addition the book is remarkable because it also constitutes a feminist legal history of the 1970's to the present. This is because RBG made so much of that history herself before she became a judge on the D.C. Circuit and Justice on the Supreme Court. The author is a distinguished emerita professor of history at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where she concentrates on feminist legal history, Gender Issues, and Women's History. So the reader really gets a very helpful dose of these subjects as the biography unfolds. Finally, the book is somewhat unique in emphasizing the key role in Ginsburg's development of values and perspectives from her growing up Jewish in Brooklyn, which shaped her entire life.Several other aspects also stand out. The author's treatment of RBG's period as head of the ACLU's Women's Rights Project, while a Columbia law professor, demonstrates Ginsburg as the master strategist, figuring in what order test cases should be litigated to develop the most impact. Unlike Thurgood Marshall when he was litigating for the NAACP, and was the big kahuna who directed most of the cases, RGB had a range of other groups and litigators whom she had to try and coordinate into a meaningful strategy. The book also demonstrates how campaigns are organized to secure Court of Appeals and Supreme Court nominations. This discussion highlights the happy relationship Ginsburg had with her tax-expert spouse Marty (as we in DC referred to him), who participated in gaining particularly the Clinton Supreme Court nomination for her.The author (a non-lawyer) does a solid job on looking at Ginsburg's work as a judge. I must say though that RBG's 13 years on the DC Circuit are not in my opinion sufficiently developed, with the exception of the role she played in bringing both the liberal and republican factions together despite their deep divisions. The author does a much grander job on her Supreme Court decisions. Particularly outstanding is her discussion of the Virginia Military Institute case which probes every aspect. Intra-court dynamics are also examined during both the Rehnquist and Roberts courts. A number of key cases are examined, including the Violence Against Women Act case, Bush v. Gore, the Voting Rights Act litigation, and the impact of the Ledbetter dissent which produced Congressional legislation. The important interplay between affirmative action and Ginsburg's perpetual unsuccessful efforts to get the Court to adopt a strict standard under the equal protection clause in sex discrimination cases was something the author illuminates which I had not been aware of.The author wraps up with the 2016 term, by which point Ginsburg is the senior associate justice and the leader of the opposition to the conservative majority on the Court. The challenges posed by the Trump administration as regards immigration, as well as the Gorsuch appointment mean that RBG can never relax her vigilance to do what she feels is right. At 84, it is apparent her many years of service have at times been exhausting, but she always bounces back. Let's hope that continues.An outstanding effort and essential resource for anyone interested in Ginsburg or the Supreme Court. 110 pages of notes support the text and are extremely detailed; read them along with the discussion to which they refer. Also, 93 excellent photos are sprinkled throughout the text adding insight. The bibliography contains references to author interviews, archival sources, case summaries and journal articles and books. And once again Knopf has turned to Berryville Graphics in Virginia to do their usual outstanding job in printing the book. A winning achievement all around.

I should have researched this biography enough to learn that it is "Unauthorized" . The author has minimal insight into her subject -- Ruth Nader Ginsburg -- and gives to the reader a work more akin to hero worship than serious analysis of the private person; instead it reads like one list of admirable accomplishment. Yes, RBG is admirable; a legend of of the best in American jurisprudence, rendering and writing thoughtful, measured, decisions and dissents without "legislating from the bench." Her intelligence, education, common sense, political impartiality, and wisdom are the traits I would hope to find in every Supreme Court Justice. Sadly, we are living in a new and very different era than when she came of age.That being said, no one is perfect. And the author paints a picture of a perfect person. Surely, at some point in her life, Ginsburg disappointed her parents, fought with her husband, embarrassed or hurt the feelings of children, had an argument with a friend, lost her temper? She is, after all, a human being. But we get no information of that kind which would help to draw a picture of Ginsburg as full person. A good biographer explores her subject's flaws as well as her merits.The author does an admirable job of detailing the chronology of Ginsburg's life and accomplishments, though too often using over long and complicated sentence structure; sometimes a single sentence may include five or six indepent and dependent clauses; she rarely makes use of a semi-colon. Reading this work was slog for me. I finished the book for the information it contained, not because I derived any pleasure from its prose. Three Stars

Her early experiences and the guidance of her mother to be more than what was expected of a young Jewish girl established the precedents that would lead the future Justice to a life dedicated to seeing that all people, regardless of race, class, or gender, received equal treatment under the law. This book takes us through her early years, the challenges she faced in college and her pursuit of a career, through her days with the ACLU, and, eventually, to the Supreme Court. Detailed, well-researched, and worth your time.

This definitive work about a truly great woman was the highlight of my weekend. It is a well-researched, well-written book about a pioneer of women's law and a great asset to the Supreme Court.

Jane Sherron De Hart's writing is as eloquent as the Justice's opinions and her riveting background narratives of several of the justice's cases and opinions are a treasure chest of "fly on the wall" history that the average person could never know without months of arduous, adroit research. This book was recommended by my professor.It's basically a collection of binary math tricks that really help out in understanding the algorithms that are best suited for whatever you are trying to accomplish.It's pretty advanced so if you don't have a basic understanding of coding yet, then this will be pretty hard to grasp and make adequate use of it.

The value of this book is in it's shortcut for writing your own code for a microcontroller or generic processor. It contains many shortcuts that can be used at the machine code and c code level for general mathematics and bit detection and modification. There is a very good section on CRC mathematics and operations and error correction. However, a good knowledge of mathematical representation is desired since the book is not structured to make the information easy to understand. This would be a good book if you are trying to create complicated mathematical algorithms for a microprocessor or controller. I wouldn't recommend it for most programmers.

Incredibly unique book. The techniques and algorithms are incredibly useful for embedded development, but I cannot speak to its usefulness on x86 and would advise against using many of these techniques on there where most of this is implemented in hardware.What I got out of this:Multiword multiplication for fast high precision fixed point on ARM chips that lack fpus, branchless integer min and max is very handy for Thumb mode, pre-computing magic numbers for division and modulus enables MUCH faster lookups in hash tables, the graphs of functions at the very end are super fascinating, and the superoptimizer this man wrote is very simple but incredibly fun to play with! I adapted it to use multithreading and it's helped me reduce some code to the simplest possible sequence. I've had special success in reducing switch cases or long conditions involving integer arithmetic.Also I can definitely see uses for other things in the book, like the multibyte addition and the floating point chapter. Theres a little bit in there about the most famous bithack of them all. And the notation used is really clean.This book is a gem and I hope we get more in the future. For now though I'll settle for leafing through and discovering the things I missed.

This is fun and useful assortment of low-level coding tricks/super-efficient algorithms. For instance, there are specialized algorithms for computing integer division-by-7. Who knows when this is useful, but if you need to do it super fast, use the algorithm in this book to shave off a bunch of cycles compared with floating-point division plus rounding. That's just a taste; there are explanations of super-optimized routines for popcount (counting the # of 1s in a binary word), all sorts of other binary operation tricks, stuff of grey codes, applications of Hilbert curves to binary codes, even exotic bases for number representations such as base -2 (negative 2) or even imaginary/complex bases (who knew these even existed?) Plenty more in here -- those are just some random fun topics. If these sound interesting, you need to read this book.

There is a good possibility that most people who buy this will have no use for this information. If you do need it, its invaluable as a reference, and overall a great book to have on yours shelf. The book consists of recipes for simplifying many computational tasks with integers and floats using Boolean logic or mathematics. Where applicable, proofs are given. I am very happy with the content and format of this book. That being said, see my warning below.The book reads like a textbook and contains a lot of math. Most code is presented in assembly. Explanations are given but don't expect concrete answers. Getting a solution will require a bit of analysis on your part. if you don't like math or thinking things through, do not buy this book. If you have no experience with low/mid level languages, or bitwise operations, you may find yourself a little lost.

I develop for embedded systems. Mostly in C, but sometimes in assembly. This book is fantastic. I just got it today and can't put it down. You may have picked up a few of these tricks along the line, but THIS is the definitive collection, and I plan to keep it right on my desk.

Excellent book! Author moved story from past to present from different characters' perspective....I personally love that in a book as it keeps me absorbed in the story as it all comes together at the end ....which left one surprise I did not expect. Rich characters with a story that is threaded by the realization that acts of terrorism sadly do not only belong to those of our generation. Eliza Graham one of my favorite authors and this was one of her best.

Another Day Gone by Eliza GrahamI received the Kindle edition through a free giveaway on Goodreads.The story begins pre WWII in Coventry with an explosion set by the IRA. The wrong man is tried and found guilty of the murder of innocent bystanders. He is hanged for the crime and years later his granddaughter goes searching for clues. Can she find him innocent?In a second twist to the story two sisters, Sara and Polly discover a family secret related to a car accident that killed their parents before Sara's birth. After their grandfathers death do they find out the real story of the past.The book started out slow laying out the many characters then near the middle of the book the story picks up and quickly entrenches the reader into a ending that will shock you and tie death, murder and lies all together.This book is historical fiction and takes place over a time period of six decades. It's also the first book I have read by the author and I liked it because it had several storylines with twists and turn every chapter that kept the book interesting.

Family secrets loom large in this carefully plotted well written historical novel. Graham has done an especially good job with weaving her characters through world events; you'll learn a little bit as well as enjoy the sweep. Thanks to netgalley for this= I had not read Graham before but I'm going to look for her in the future. Recommend this if you enjoy family sagas from a female perspective.

After reading a couple of Eliza's excellent books, this was a dog's breakfast. All over the place, no idea of where she was going or where she'd been. Most disappointing, abandoned 30% of the way through. I have a life to live and other books to read after all.

Immediately captured my interest with wonderfully descriptive characters and scenes. Felt I was truly there, experiencing it all for myself. My second book by this author and already know I'll be sorry when I've read all she's written.

This book was about missed opportunities, but I think it also missed some opportunities for character development. Some of the flash backs were confusing. Enjoyed the story overall.

I enjoyed the book a lot. I did have a bit of trouble keeping the time line in my head as the story went back and forth thru various time periods. Otherwise, I would have given it 5 stars. It is even worth reading again!

It was an interesting story, however, the way it moved back and forth sometimes made it hard to follow., and I got weary of it after a while.

Two editors of the book are Field medalists, but of the two, Witten and Deligne, Deligne is a pure mathematician while only Witten is a physicist. In the preface of the book, the other editors describe their gratitude to Witten for the time and effort he and other physicists put in during the Special Year (1996-7) from which the book arose as lecture notes. I think this educational process must have been extremely valuable, but I find the book itself to be not well-organized and focused, and the lecture notes are somewhat cryptic. That said, as articles, I feel that individually the various parts of the book might be very worthwhile. I was looking for something more focused and systematic, that explains four and not five stars. I feel that pure mathematicians have an extremely daunting task in penetrating the often abstruse aspects of quantum field theory and string theory. On the other hand, there is obviously a mathematical richness about these fields. For people who are much better prepared than I, and are at a research level, I believe this book might be useful. Still, I think it was helpful to know of the existence of this book.

Together with its complementary Vol. 2, THIS book is the one to read right after one learns the standard tricks of the trade, from a "physicist's book" like Peskin/Schroeder or Ryder, or even Weinberg. Granted, that Weinberg, in his 3 volume tome, does cover QFT to a tremendous detail and commendable mathematical rigour. But there is still a mathematical void that Weinberg leaves. This book, written by some of the most accomplished mathematical physicists of today (Witten, Deligne, Freed, Kazhdan), eliminates that void and puts the reader at the cutting edge of what is known at present in terms of the mathematical foundations of quantum field theory.For that alone, this book is highly recommended, but only for the physicist who has a strong mathematical bent and curiosity. The coverage of topics is more or less well balanced, and the writing is precise, crisp and clear.

A real book for a real mathematician.If you are a mathematician learning to apply math to quantum physics, do not go without this book series. It is exceptional!! Mathematically written with variety and depth not met in any other resource that I have seen specifically relating the two.You will not be unhappy with this, I guarantee it.<3 <3 this book series.

This book is an excellent compliation of articles written for mathematicians who want to understand quantum field theory. It is not surprising then that the articles are very formal and there is no attempt to give any physical intuition to the subject of quantum field theory. This does not mean however that aspiring physicists who want to specialize in quantum field theory should ont take a look at the contents. The two volumes are worth reading, even if every article cannot be read because of time constraints. All of the articles are written by the some of the major players in the mathematics of quantum field theory. Volume 1 starts off with a glossary of the terms used by physicists in quantum field theory and is nicely written. The next few hundred pages are devoted to supersymmetry and supermanifolds. A very abstract approach is given to these areas, with the emphasis not on computation but on the structure of supermanifolds as they would be studied mathematically. There is an article on classical field theory put in these pages, which is written by Pierre Deligne and Daniel Freed, and discussed in the framework of fiber bundles. The discussion of topological terms in the classical Lagrangian is especially well written. There is an introduction to smooth Deligne cohomology in this article, and this is nice because of the difficulty in finding understandable literature on this subject. Part Two of Volume 1 is devoted to the formal mathematical aspects of quantum field theory. After a short introduction to canonical quantization, the Wightman approach is discussed in an article by David Kazhdan. Most refreshing is that statement of Kazhdan that the Wightman approach does not work for gauge field theories. This article is packed with interesting insights, especially the section on scattering theory, wherein Kazdan explains how the constructions in scattering theory have no finite dimensional analogs. The article by Witten on the Dirac operator in finite dimensions is fascinating and a good introduction to how powerful concepts from quantum field theory can be used to prove important results in mathematics. A fairly large collection of problems (with solutions) ends Volume 1. The first part of Volume 2 is devoted entirely to the mathematics of string theory and conformal field theory. The article by D'Hoker stands out as one that is especially readable and informative. D. Gaitsgory has a well written article on vertex algebras and defines in a very rigorous manner the constructions that occur in the subject. The last part of Volume 2 discusses the dynamics of quantum field theory and uses as much mathematical rigor as possible. One gets the impression that it this is the area where it is most difficult to proceed in an entirely rigorous way. Path integrals, not yet defined mathematically and used throughout the discussion. The best article in Volume 2, indeed of the entire two volumes is the one on N = 2 Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions. It is here that the most fascinating constructions in all of mathematics find their place. These two volumes are definitely worth having on one's shelf, and the price is very reasonable considering the expertise of the authors and considering what one will take away after reading them.

If you are a mathematician and want to know what QFT and string theory (ST) are about, or if you are a string theorist, but want to know more about the mathematics behind the theory, then this book is what you are looking for. This book is totally different than any other standard textbook on QFT or ST. Mathematicians will love the fact that it is written in a language that is (close to) theirs, and physicists will enjoy it (provided they have a more solid background in mathematics than the average practical physicists), because it shows QFT and ST from completely "new" angles.The book is a collection of lectures given by the various contributors, which fit together perfectly . The first volume has a very good overview of concepts and definitions at the very beginning and serves as a more mathematically oriented introductory treatment of SUSY and QFT with many advanced topics near the end. The second volume starts with an axiomatic approach of CFT and its use in string theory and then quantises strings with the BRST method (on a more mathematical level than usual), which is done superbly.It's a great reference, a wonderful textbook and a true delicacy in modern mathematical physics. A MUST HAVE for every mathematically inclined physicst or any mathematician with interests in physics! Great value for money...
