Outstanding service, great product!!

Great book!

My reason for selecting this new volume was to get a better understanding of complexity theory and how certain laws can help us better understand our changing physical and social universes.I was not disappointed, and John Gribbin displays his well established ability to explain often quite complicated ideas in an energetic style that sweeps the reader along. He begins by discussing two states - two different ends of the spectrum between Total Order and Total Chaos. Somewhere between those two states is a zone of complexity, where nature teeters on the brink between order and chaos. To use a metaphor, this is like the moment of transition when slush could melt or freeze, or when water might turn to vapour. In this zone very interesting things happen - both in the natural world (at an atomic or larger physical level) in the social world (when social networks form) and in the biological world which is where Gribbin ultimately takes us - showing us how complexity operates in food chains, but also in terms of DNA and evolution. The book is captivating and my only regret is that I didn't write down a few notes along the way so I can dig back and think about how some of the universal laws might explain why (in my line of work) some new products do - or don't succeed. On the cusp of chaos, anything might happen.I'm actually going to read Deep Simplicity Again because it is both so informative and so enjoyable. A good book to read in tandem with this one is Duncan Watt's excellent Six Degrees which focuses on network theory.

I have just finished reading Deep Simplicity and felt the urge to tell anyone who would listen how I felt about the book. Read the other reviewers to find out what the book is about. There have been very few occasions and very few books that moved me in the way that Deep Simplicity did, for it is a work of art and without doubt a genuinely beautiful piece of literature. What's more, I feel that the beauty inherent in the book is self-similar on many scales, from the lucidly illustrative metaphors, to paragraphs that grab you as they weave delicately expounded threads together, to the overall structure and flow of the book itself. I felt privileged to have read the book. After I finished I was left with a tremendous sense of appreciation for and recognition with our planet, its biosphere, life, and the Universe at large; even for my fellow man - although our depredations are made strikingly apparent. My final and lasting feeling is one of profound enlightenment; something felt when previously reading Gribbin, but not to this extent.Thank You John Gribbin, for writing this book; $24.95 in one currency, priceless in another.

I appreciate greatly the author's aim, sharing his sense of wonder with his readers. Gribbin gives a wide perspective about chaos and complexity with facts from the history of science.Simple laws, non-linearity, sensitivity to initial conditions and feedback give rise to chaos and complexity. Gribbin tries to reveal the facts of our universe with these concepts. Also the author gives some good examples for accessing the subject with ease.Power law pattern and gaia concepts are also analyzed in the book for understanding life.I derived much benefit from this book.

I'm no scientist. Nor an academic. And it's been about twenty years since any formal full-time education.I found this book after rifling through ten or so boxes of assorted second-hand books up for grabs in a community centre on the Isles of Scilly.Something about the cover appealed to me. Maybe because I'm an artist/creative. Perhaps because I recognised the Hokusai reference and liked the clarity of the art-work. Certainly I'd read and loved James Gleick's classic book on chaos in the Nineties. And the words 'deep simplicity' resonated in my bones. Especially to a man forever in search of simpler ways of existing, to a man drawn instinctively to Zen. Whatever my reasons for picking up this book, I came to love it.I read a fair amount. Every book has its pace, some quicker, some slower, some turgid, some dense, some with big spaces between paragraphs, and some with type so small it leaves your eyeballs raw. I had a very slow entry into this book, one of those 'I've read this page twenty times and it's still not quite getting in there' scenarios. One of those occasions where you wake yourself up with a 'huh?' as your head nods to the side, you try re-reading the same sentence to once again find yourself five minutes later staring blankly at a book with a crick in your neck and a numb buttock. That may have had to do with my inability to focus my mind on the job in hand at the time, or perhaps that I was sizing it up as to whether to bother reading it at all. Was it just too geeky? I hadn't paid for it, so didn't feel that there was any reason to suck my money's worth of juice from it. Perhaps I was just plain tired and needed sleep more than information at that moment in my life. But I persevered.Initially I felt back in a classroom. Out of my depth. Wrestling with concepts, that although expressed with a beautiful clarity, wallowed in the murky depths just out of reach of my present level of understanding. Like a deep sea diver I only saw glimpses of those things that my sphere of illumination touched. And they were strange.Although also familiar: 'strangely familiar'.I needed time to absorb the paragraphs, to 'update my operating system'. Just a few pages and I'd have to stop, put the book down, digest for a few hours/days, allow my brain to chew over the content. But not for too long. If I did, the thread would go cold and I'd have forgotten what went on before. And so started a dance between myself and this book.It grew on me. Fast. And illuminated so many diverse corners of existence that I was left reeling with the implications. Giddy. It's a must read. An enormous read. Should be compulsory reading for every human. The highest wisdom that we now know, the cutting edge of contemporary science/physics/thought written in simple terms for a lay person like me to understand. With stacks of fascinating references to contemporary life and culture, examples being illustrated with traffic jams, telephone noise interference, spots on leopards, estuaries, earthquakes, boiling water, the shape of ferns, to make difficult concepts very accessible and relevant to the world in which we live.It was a pleasure to go on this journey. To rediscover the joys of learning from one with a much clearer world-view than my own. Made me feel like I'd been living in Plato's Cave! My diver's sphere of illumination is now so much bigger. Perhaps, dare I say it, I've even been allowed a glimpse of the bigger picture. Of the essence of the nature of creation. And no, it isn't a guy on a cloud with a long flowing beard! It has deep simplicity at its heart.I only wish John Gribbin had been my science teacher at school. He's given me a passion for the subject, a relevance that the dry, dusty delivery of my teachers of yore never managed to kindle. Perhaps I'd have made different decisions along the way, and my current life of yoga, paint-brushes and guitars might instead be replaced with lectures and seminars and bright brains chewing over the big questions of existence? Perhaps this doorway is still open.Whatever, I only hope that you too can experience the joys of this book. Maybe my very own copy will find its way to you one day. I passed it on to someone I thought would be interested, as I do with most of my books. I'd like to think it'll keep doing the rounds until there's more Sellotape than pages holding it together!Namaste.

An excellent non-math explanation of chaos theory. Mr. Gribbin is able to touch the essence of chaos theory by discussing its application to various real life scenarios. Interesting and entertaining. It changed the way I view complex systems.

Whoopy for Whoopie! Another winner! This series is so cute! Eack book focuses on one member in a tightly knit group of young girls who attend the same ballet school. This book's focus is Jerzey Mae, one of the triplets. I knew it was gonna be a fun book when her parents said Jerzey Mae's little brother (Mason) would have to go to ballet school with the triplets because they (their parents) had to work. There's alway a problem to solve, a little lesson in each book. This one shows help can come from the least expected places. I highly recommend this book as well as the others in the series. I can't wait for the next one!!P.S. The kids loved it, too!

my daughter is ten she will be 11 soon.this is the 3rd book in the series and we think this is going to be her last, not because she doesn't like it but she's getting to old for the characters.these books are very well written and have story line the kids can relate to.my daughter looked sad when she said she thinks she's getting to old for it. Whoopi Goldberg only puts these out once or twice a year.so she has a while before the next comes out.we love these books.

Perfect book for girls who enjoy the art of dance.

My brown sugar bellas love these!!!

This book is the third in a series of five different books. These books are so real to the imagination. My daughter and I have read them all, and she is only 5 years of age. She knows all of the characters, and loves them all. We can't wait for more. We are also looking for the cartoon series to be produced as well. This is the type of read that every little girl should read, or have read to them. Especially great for mommy and daughter time.

Cute books. I brought the series of books as a gift for my granddaughter's kindergarten graduation. She loves to read and dance so I'm hoping she loves these books as well.

Great Job Whoopi. Girl drama at the elementary level. But it does have life lessons attached in the story

My granddaughter loves this series! Would recommend!

It took me a while to get into this book but in the end I really enjoyed it. There were many new facets to the story and outright differences from the Disney movie (all of the books in the Twisted Tales series are retellings of the Disney movies) as well as filling in obvious gaps/plot holes. I really enjoyed the subtle nods to the movie as well as the empowering of Belle. She was a strong character in the movie but in this book she has even more agency and thereby is even more awesome. This story gets really dark and upsetting at the end. It's not quite Stephen King but you may want to be mindful. I suppose it's not much of a spoiler to say that the asylum only hinted at in the movie is more prominent and it is exactly what real asylums were like in the past. If descriptions of what was done to patients would disturb you or your child, then you may want to skip parts at the end.Speaking of the ending, it was lovely. A different sort of happily ever after but one I wholeheartedly support. I kind of wish this was the story for the new live action remake.

What a disappointment this book was. I'm the biggest fan of the original Disney film, and although this book did have its upsides, it still sucked big time, right up to the incomplete, unsatisfying (non-) ending. The premise of the book was very interesting, but it was so badly handled that it made me regret the time I wasted reading it.My favorite part of "Beauty and the Beast" was, of course, the relationship between Belle and the Beast. Here, their relationship is downplayed in favor of the social/moral issues related to the persecution of "Les Charmantes" and a whole long backstory about Maurice and Belle's mother that I frankly didn't care that much about. If I wanted to read about the evils of discrimination and persecution of innocents, I would read a historical or contemporary novel, not a book based on a Disney fairy tale. Some parts of the story didn’t even make sense. For example, the magical rose turned into dust when Belle touched it, messing up with the curse. Why??? There was nothing in the spell the enchantress put on the prince (in either this book or the original movie) that said that the magic rose couldn't be touched by anybody, much less that it would turn to dust or complete the curse. The only statement was that the spell had to be broken before the last petal fell, which a completely different thing. In fact, the rose was from the enchantress’ own garden, so chances are Belle had touched it before, same as the rest of the flowers in her house.Another issue I had was Belle finding out about the Beast’s curse from the beginning, completely changing the moral of the original story, which was that she could love him without knowing he actually was a prince in disguise.I also found a little strange that the villain of the story didn’t even think of using the “les charmantes” magic for himself, which seems out of character for somebody as evil as him. It would have given the villian an even stronger motivation for his "experiments". Speaking of the villain, I easily found out who he was almost from the beginning of the story, so the "great revelation" of his real identity fell completely flat.2 good things about this book: It was only 99 cents, and it made me want to re-watch the original Beauty and the Beast a dozen times more to forget this version exists.

When reading this particulate take on the 1991 Disney classic, I found it to be a quite enjoyable read. I love how we get to see who belle's mother is; both as the enchantress that cursed the beast and who she was when Maurice first met her. What was going on with the beast really set that he has a heart and it really made in more sympathetic as the story when on. Belle was level headed and proactive as she should be. Even thought they don't get much time devoted to them, I still like the enchanted objects but really wish they had more of a role in this story. Really, I'm just nitpicking. Love the portrayal of Maurice's past and the current change to the status quo. Loved how in character everyone is, especially that one deeper look into a certain character later on. Overall, a pretty good read.

This is honestly one of my favorite retellings of the Beauty and the Beast mythos. It has a wonderfully detailed backstory, character development, and feels natural when it takes its ‘twist’.Beloved characters are seen in new situations to give them more depth. As the plot grows, each page you turn will be exiting and filled with wonderment.Highway recommend this book and this author and her series!

Anyone that loves the original story will still love this book. its exciting, fresh and some parts mix and mash into the story we all know by heart. I now cant imagine Belles mom being anyone else!

It was a fun read and I enjoyed the twist on the fairy tale. The writer also added good depth to the beast and Belle's characters, and raised some of the stakes. Its clear this author spent a lot of time pulling apart the original story, and even more time piecing it back together in a way that is refreshing yet true to the original story. (To be honest, I wish the recent movie had pulled more ideas from here when trying to fill in plot holes and character development. So if the movie left you wanting more, or something different, then this might be a good book for you :)

Great book! It was a little hard for me to start but loved that it followed the Disney version a bit and then it twisted. But I loved the twist it kept my interest and the last few chapters I couldn't put it down. I love the change in fairy tale stories. Don't we all think what if this happened or that?

I collect any and every retelling of Beauty and the Beast that I can get my hands on. This version was beautiful and nostalgic describing detailed scenes straight out of the Disney animated film. And the twist with Belles mother as the enchantress still kept an element of surprise and intrigue. I loved that Belle’s internal diologue referenced the many books she read, and used those to influence her decisions and thought processes. This felt so true to character. I definitely want to read the other books in the twisted tale collection
