A pastor recommended Warren W. Wiersbe to me who said that anything by Pastor Wiersbe is worth it. I agree. I acquired "Be Right" and wanted to acquire all the "BE" series but settled for his Expository Commentary. I do not regret purchasing the Commentary. Not being at home, and wanting a copy for a bible discussion group on the book of James, I bought "Be Mature". If you do not have other commentaries on James by John Calvin, Thomas Manton (an excellent commentary) or Charles Haddon Spurgeon, settle for Wiersbe. It is well organized, readable and has a good amount of practical insights for a believer. "While still an unbeliever, James must have paid attention to what Jesus taught" in the Sermon on the Mount (p. 21). A reader of "Be Mature" will pay attention to James and what Jesus taught.There is one part of the book (pp. 25-28) entitled "How Can We Get The Most Out of This Study?" It will remind one of the need to be born again, be honest as we examine our lives, to be obedient and be prepared FOR EXTRA TRIALS AND TESTINGS. We are to bend to the Word where our experiences, opinions and views are concerned. "We must measure our spiritual growth by the Word of God".(p. 27) That is a sign of maturity.I highly recommend this book for your study of the Word.
This is a wonderful commentary. Wiersbe focuses on Christian Maturity and draws out James' words and makes them very applicable to the modern Christian. I didn't like that Wiersbe didn't used the King James Bible as his sole source, but that is easily overcome by using one's Bible alongside the commentary and by referring to the Textus Receptus as needed. I used this along with David Cloud's commentary on James and John Phillips commentary on James to teach through the book. The trio (along with the King James Bible) made for a wonderful study. The other problem I had with Wiersbe's method is minor. He didn't really bring out the best from each and every verse. He mainly focuses on his theme: maturity. However, he did such a grand job with that, I couldn't help but give the book 5 stars.
BE MATURE focuses on the Book of James, where he teaches about spiritual maturity, overcoming temptation, controlling the tongue, and praying effectively. Wiersbe emphasizes God’s Word and growing your faith.This is not my favorite book by Wiersbe, because it seemed lengthy and jumped around quite a bit. But, as with all Wiersbe’s book, it is biblically sound and did grow my faith. I’m glad I read it.
This commentary on the Book of James is absolutely wonderful. Our Bible Study group has been thoroughly enjoying it alongside our study of James, and we are definitely looking forward to delving into more of Warren Wiersbe's "Be" books... I also recommend this book as a gift. I have already given five out to five different loved ones, who are all also appreciating it.
Reading these "Be.." books are truly so helpful and inspiring. It's hard to put them down at night to sleep. They encourage me so much to grow in Christ and strive for spiritual maturity. Another wonderful book!
I’m a BIG Weirsby fan. I like how he brings relevant Old Testament truths to a New Testament commentary. This book shows what Christian maturity looks like. Joy during trials. Preventing tests from becoming temptations. Confessing sin and changing. This book is easy to read. Appropriate for individual or group study.
Very good book on becoming a mature christian. This and the Wiersbe workbook on James accompany one another. I bought this considering using it for a Bible study I'm facilitating and we will be using it.
Although Weirsbe and I don't always think alike, he consistently brings an interesting, well thought our perspective. Used in a church Bible Study class and learned a lot from the book and others in the class.
