This book was awesome. The premise was like online dating match making but with vampires and humans in a world where vampires rule and humans have to donate blood to cover living expenses. I loved each budding relationship Jewel had with Kingston, Diego, and Austin and can't wait to see what is in store for Jewel and the Divines in the next book.

I liked that it was a new twist to the ole Vampire romance. However, similar to V romances from the past, these vampires come with interesting attitudes/traits but the heroine, Jewel, is really not a heroine. There is nothing interesting in her character at all. She's boring, needy for love, not very eloquent, crass, of low level income (of course), not even strong physically (ever heard of a gym hello?)...this Cinder is not very attractive. I get it if she was a Victoria Secrets model, lol. (even they have interesting lives outside of modeling) So, all in all for me, it was sad really. Sad that so many young women might identify with this woman and need a fantasy to feel okay about themselves. I raised boys now successful men but if I had a daughter I would raise her to be the exact opposite of the main character. More Meghan Markle and less her ugly stepsister.

I have to say, the author nailed the guys in this one. They all had personalities and shined as individuals but made a great team as well. At times, I thought they were too sweet, considering what they are, but I really liked them all. The setting of a post-apocalyptic world where vampires ruled was interesting. I even enjoyed the plot line with the villains of the story, although the main bad guy is pretty creepy. The writing is good with very few errors and I enjoyed the dialogue. Some of the fight scenes could use a little polishing, but overall not bad.So why did I take off two star? The main character, Jewel, is straight up cringe worthy. It’s honestly never really explained how vamps find out who is applying for a blood match that makes them want to put themselves in the pool to match up. Regardless, here are the three hottest vampires throwing their names in the hat, and practically drooling over her, even though she’s starved and admittedly hasn’t bathed herself in who knows how long. Her vocabulary, that one of the guys thought was charming, seemed really immature. I never really understood her appeal. She is often whiny and annoying, crying all the time. She does manage one act of bravery, but the rest of the time she’s very needy. She often spouts off fairly insensitive things towards her men, but they say one word wrong and she flies off the handle even while they’re tripping over themselves to apologize.As much as I enjoyed the other aspects of the story, I’m not sure if I’ll continue on due to the issues above. I would try another series by this author, with the hope that whatever she works on next will give us a heroine we can root for.

I had a hard time getting into this book, especially from the beginning. It took a while to get the story moving. The plot was different but interesting. I just didn't like the main character - Jewel. Nothing about her was appealing. Her personality was drab. To make matters worse, is the way she talks. It was beyond annoying. It was a juvenile type slang that grates on the nerves quickly. The constant repetition of phrases and cheesy nicknames were almost enough to make me ditch the story. I doubt I will read anymore of the series.

I read cover to cover to give it a chance , but I found most of it a bit cringey. SPOILER ALERT-There’s nothing really special or outstanding about Jewel to have 3 handsome, rich, nice guy vampires be interested in only her. I think I would have believed it more if they had a special relationship with her but dated other people on the side. There’s no incentive to have her as their match for life-for all 3 men. She also basically falls for them all the first second she meets them. There’s no relationship evolvement for the reader to be comfortable that she chose all 3. Maybe there will be more back story in the series to follow, but I’ll admit that I most likely won’t read itsince I couldn’t connect with Jewel’s relationship with all 3.

I really liked this book. It was different than most rh books that are currently out. It left me wanting more. Jewel is a loud, sassy girl who doesn't really care what other people think. I definitely recommend this book and will be waiting impatiently for book 2.

I downloaded this for some fun reading on a plane and it did NOT disappoint! It's a great take on the Reverse Harem storyline with compelling characters and engaging dialogue. It's very well written. I love a book that let's me escape so thoroughly into the authors imagination. I can't wait to read the next one! Oh, and the steamy bits? It amps up the heat without going too explicit and I appreciate that in this style of story.

This book was so good! So different from a lot of other vampire books out there. The story is unique and I love all 3 brothers. I couldn’t put it down.

This is a fantastic story with real world implications. Mr. Martinez shows us in great detail what these migrants who want to travel to the United States go through. The stories that he tell of, both as to why they want to go to the United States and their troubles really make you grieve for these migrants and hope that all of them find a way to get to the US safely. However, in our current political climate, and the incompleteness of Enrique Pena Nieto, none of this is likely to happen, but this is worth reading to get a better picture of the situation and find ways to help out. Great writing by Mr. Martinez and him being able to tell 14 individual stories to highlight the issues. Good read.

Best non-fiction look at a subculture since "Behind the Beautiful Forevers." Martinez was patient and courageous in his journeys from Central America to the U.S.-Mexico border and his reward was to be let into the world of migrants, narcos, coyotes, and bandits. It's not a bleak book, though. It's written well enough that I enjoyed the journey, even if it was a horrific journey.

This book by Central American journalist Oscar Martinez relates his first hand experience of travelling on Mexico's cross country train system with immigrants from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador who are fleeing their homelands, often not for purely economic reasons but because of the drug-trade related violence perpetrated by the Mara gangs that have been extradited from the US and which have completely overwhelmed the capabilities of the police and the authorities in their own countries. The details of their terrible journeys, continually preyed upon by the coyote gangs, by the narcos and by the Mexican police are horrifying, fascinating and heart-rending and I challenge anyone to read this book without sometimes having to take a deep breath and wipe away the tears of anger and frustration that mankind is capable of treating his poorest and most vulnerable brethren in this way. With one of the leading contenders for the US presidency threatening to build a wall all the way along the border, this is a very raw, real and timely look at what has already long been happening on the other side of the border.

This is a brilliantly written, deeply moving account. While reading it, I often thought of George Orwell's "The Road to Wigan Pier" and "Down and Out in Paris and London." The author shows not only wonderful writing talents, but also stunning courage and a deep, no-nonsense compassion in chronicling the movement of desperate migrants from CentralAmerica across Mexico. No one who reads this can doubt that these desperate people are refugees, fleeing a chronic, endemic violence which our American government did much to create. The migration process will never look the same to you after you read this. A remarkable, deeply humane, and achingly sad book.

This is a well-written and engaging book that gives great insight into the conditions experienced by Central American immigrants during the long and dangerous journey to the United States and what they hope will be a better life. Martinez also explores the many negative impacts on Mexican society brought about by the increasing involvement of narcotics cartels in the immigration pipeline.

Heartbreaking story, well told, much like Enrique's Journey, that begs the question, how does a legitimate government allow this kind of depravity to go on? And rhetorically, when will the United States stop its insidious practice of meddling in the internal affairs of other countries and destroying any chance they might have of attaining political stability?For starters, all you dopers need to stop facilitating this violence and financing these narcotraffickers by purchasing illegal drugs. Second, voters need to change the immigration and drug policies in this country radically. Obama and Congress love mucking around in the Middle East yet pay so little attention to the house on fire next door to us. This is an excellent book covering what has become sickeningly familiar territory to anyone who reads up on Mexico and Latin America.No one should have to flee from their home to another country just to be safe and have a decent life.. The United States should consider financing the migrant shelters along the border rather than these ugly, useless walls and tens of thousands of border patrol agents. What a neurotic nation: if a policy fails miserably, increase funding for it.

I won't forget this book. Provides incredible insight into the gauntlet that Central American and Mexican migrants must run for a chance to make it to the US. The author talks a lot about the changes that happened recently but I am left with the impression that the situation is always changing. There is a torrent of migrants and drugs flowing thru Mexico that creates its own sick and shifting eco-system.Brilliantly and bravely reported.

Being born and raised in the US, these stories about the struggles of those enduring lives and subsequent journeys of hardships to emigrate to the US give me reason to pause to reflect on just how fortunate my life has been. Through no choice of my own, through complete random chance, my life has meandered through a world of relative prosperity and plenty. It's nearly unimaginable to learn of the hardships endured and lives lost in pursuit of the dream many of us US born people take for granted.

Learned a lot about the Lehman Brothers. Cotton trading of Lehman brothers in Montgomery, Alabama to 55 Water street in Manhattan to Shearson/American Express buyout in 1985. Egotistical, greedy millionaires. Read about the final couple years that ended in 2008 with bankruptcy. Now I know how they started.

Enjoyed this view of what happened to a great financial firm. Makes one wonder what other towers of power are running amuck today!

This story of greed and glory is one that has been acted out in all types of businesses - large or small, service or product, new or old. It is a parable of overinflated egos, hyperpolitical environments and the inability of individuals to see their limits when blinded by the light of self-glorification. It is essential reading for anyone in a shared leadership role - partners, executives in tightly run corporations, etc. - and is most valuable for the lessons people should learn about themselves through Lehman's demise.

This is a classic tale of a company run into the ground because it had two CEOs and two different departments fighting one another for the juicy bonuses. Moreover, the CEOs had totally different characters and a completely different business vision. One was extrovert, overambitious, jealous, profoundly selfish, impulsive, volatile, dominated by lust for power, vindictive, an intriguer. The story of Lehman Brothers' problems in the mid-1980s. The author does a great job of depicting the characters.I hope he does one or more sequel. One could be about Lehman's problems in 2008 and another could be about two of the characters in this book who went on to found BlackRock and become two of the richest men in the world.The handling of pictures was much better than in most Kindle editions.

Good history of Investment Banking and especially Lehman Brothers. Tough reading sometimes due to the insider point of views on specific personalities and conflicts, but all in all a good representation of the historical facts and details leading up to the eventual demise of one of the largest institutional collapses of our time.

It's good for a refresher

This is an ideal series of manuscripts for a small business owner who is looking to be more involved in their accounting and financial practices. The author demonstrates a lot of knowledge and experience in accounting with an introduction to GAAP and its governing board(s). To add a bit on GAAP and why follow these principles...GAAP is a set of standard principles for the practice of accounting. GAAP compliance is important because it standardizes terminology and approach, and offers consistency in reporting and tracking for quicker and more accurate decision-making activities.One of the helpful aspects of the manuscript are the analogies to help illustrate concepts. Such as, "Two Sides of the Accounting Coin" in reference to making sure transactions balance. And there are handy examples through the text.If you have taken a college course or two some time ago such as Accounting or Finance, this will be a good refresher. If you are a working professional in this area, this will be a quick read. As a tax professional with an accounting degree, a big chunk of my life is spent interacting with small business owners who have an entrepreneurial spark, but know nothing, really, about accounting although they think they do. Needless to say, they are a source of trouble and frustration in my profession, because they don't really understand what accounting is supposed to do, much less how it is supposed to be done, and too many of them don't provide me with the kind of financial reporting that makes tax preparation accurate and as easy as anything that involves thousands of pages of government regulations!These entrepreneurs would do well to read these three books by Greg Shields: Accounting Principles, Financial Accounting, and Management Accounting. They explain, in short and concise chapters, what accounting is and how it works. Even if it only allows entrepreneurs to speak the language their accountant uses, or convinces them that they need an accountant in the first place, it would be worth it.My only objection is that sometimes Mr. Shield's writes like an accountant. He is technically accurate and understandable, but no poet. In one chapter, he compares basic accounting rules to what appear to be U.S. Army regulations, as if that would be a comparison that would make sense to most people, rather than the relatively small percentage of the population who have military experience. I thought was a strange choice, even if it wasn't so obscure as to be impossible to understand.But that is quibbling. In fact, if you want a short and compact, but 100% accurate, accounting tutorial, these books by Greg Shields have my recommendation.

Another awesome resource from Greg Shields. Not only does he provide an overview of what financial and management accounting are but he also points out why each are used and any limitations. In this book, you will find all the business analysis tools (ratios) you will ever need for cashflow, solvency, liquidity, leverage, activity, and more! He explains which ratios to use and why and the limitations of each one. He even breaks down each of the financial statements and gives their purpose, how to set them up, and how to analyze. In addition, he provides additional food for thought in running a financially successful business or even identifying one.This book is not "Gone with the Wind" or even something you would sit and read in one hour--what book filled with ratios is? But if you are looking for tools that you can apply for the growth of your business or build your financial acuity, then this is it. Even if you have been in accounting for a while, this book is a great reference to have. Shields has taken what you would find in a 1,000 plus page textbook and provided it in less then 200 pages!

I have been in accounting/bookkeeping for over 20 years and this is a wonderful resource for anyone, whether you're new to the field or have been in it for a long time. It is a welcome addition to my virtual bookshelf and I would recommend it to anyone who needs a refresher or a guide to have on hand for reference. Small business owners would benefit from having this book as well; they could learn how to tell if their business is making money and how to read financial reports and use them to make business decisions. Overall great book!

A great read for the beginner/small business owner or someone who needs a fundemental understanding of the basic accounting principles and financial statements. Great reference guide to keep close by for those moments when you need a reminder or have a question and need a quick understanding. Easy to comprehend and thoroughly enjoyed the reference of “accounting ninja” and how to build a toolchest of knowledge. Highly recommend.

The materials are well written, easy to follow and understand and have helped me immensely. Will recommend them to my colleagues.
