I liked this book and used it on a recent trip to Dordogne. Maybe it was because it didn't just have information on Dordogne, but many of the spots that we visited weren't mentioned in the book. I think the book would be fine if the traveler were going to be in the other areas, but no so great for those who are going to spend time just in Dordogne.
Recently checked this out at my local (Tigard, OR) library so I knew what I was getting. Wife and I went through the area this year in September and wish we'd had the book then. GREAT coverage - lots of off-the-beaten-(TOURIST)-track insight/sights. MOST highly recommended.Intend, sometime soon, to spend several months in the area (best we found in France for cost and scenery) and will rely on the book for guidance then. GREAT job as with ALL their books (own several).
This book was the one that enticed me to visit this area. Beautiful photos. Intriguing 3-D drawings of the insides of castles and little towns. Lots of info about money, telephoning, etc. at the end. Very high quality paper is used, and that makes for the only drawback: the book is fairly heavy compared to other ones.
I guess this one depends upon what you're looking for in a travel book, but I really can't recommend it. I don't need all the pretty pictures because I plan on being there myself. I want someone's opinions, like "this castle is really nice, but you mustn't miss this..." type of thing. In this particular guide, it gives all the highlights, but they feel more like travel agency brochures. It's slick and pretty, and oddly heavy for such a small book. This book's not worth the weight to travel. It's more of a stay at home book, to look at and get excited over the places you can go. I prefer and would recommend books like Frommers or Rough Guides which in addition to historical information and the sites, also include practical information like what to expect when you arrive in each town, and getting around, etc. This book will not at all help you to get around in an unfamiliar place.
The book covers a very large number of topics, towns, restaurants, and other areas, but there’s not much information on each. A good general resource but could be more specific.Font is way too small for anyone that needs reading glasses.
Judging by the title, I made the mistake of assuming that there would be more than 8 pages on Bordeaux out of 320. I was very disappointed. However, if you're looking for a little taste of many towns and sights in the region, without a focus on any one area, you may find this book helpful.
Superb book! It has been most helpful in planning my next trip to France with an emphasis on this region!!!!! Can't wait to finalize my trip to the region!
We are going to the South of France this June and this book provides such great detail and overview of the region. We have been able to refine our destination choices based on the material in this book. I would recommend to anyone looking for a good travel book. We will definitely look to this brand/publisher for any future travel.
