I have to be honest here. I wasn't all that keen on this book. It's a Scottish Historical Romance yet none of the characters spoke with a Scottish dialect except for the servants and some locals. I know it's tough to write that and maybe the author wrote it like this to make it easier for readers to understand what's being said. I don't know. But I like the challenge of figuring out what's being said and since I've read enough of them, it's not a challenge at all. Rather, it takes me back to the time and allows me to get lost in the story. With the modern language being used, I didn't get that pleasure.The story was actually quite good. It jumped from character to character and it made me wonder who the real main characters were, but it was okay. Allana is supposed to be getting betrothed to Niven after his father dies, but her sister, Bettina, is in love with him and wants him for herself.Meanwhile, Niven's mother has decided that she and Niven need to mourn for his father for six months, which meant no immediate betrothal for him. That gave Allana a chance to spread her wings a bit and she falls for Kendrick Muir. He was a scoundrel, to say the least.Who she ended up with was a bit of a surprise. It's like he came out of nowhere, but he packed a punch and made in impact. I didn't feel any chemistry between them at all. It was a letdown for me.As I said, the story was pretty good overall. It had a few minor errors that didn't distract me from the reading experience. My biggest problem with it is the modern language used in a historical context. It didn't work for me, but may work for others.
I started reading this book with an expectation of lots of action and adventure as with the other novels by Ms. Adams. After reading for awhile, I was sure that this was going to disappoint me. Sure, Ms. Adams was doing her normal, fine writing, but I just did not feel good about where the story was going. I did commit to reading the whole book and, SURPRISE, my initial feeling about the story was wrong. I really enjoyed the story and the ending, along with the always appreciated extended epilogue, provided a well spent time enjoying the book. After completing my read, where I started out with a potential 3.0 review, I ended up with a 4.5 rounded up to a 5. Although there was not as much action and adventure as I would have liked, I truly did enjoy the tale of three women finding their HEA. I received a review copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving my honest review. A turnaround! Thank you.
This book had more then one love story included. Allana was the main character with more then one love interest. She did not quite seem to know what she wanted in a husband as her interests changed over time. Her life experiences turned her interest from one man to another..... There were three men and three women, however, the pairings changed more then once. New revelations were divulged all the way to the end of the story. I was given a copy of this book I exchange for an honest review and I enjoyed my time reading it.
I have read most of Alisa Adams books and this is another great book for me. It started out with Allana and Nevin who were supposed to be betrothed, but then on his deathbed Nevin’s father tells him not to marry Allana. Bettina, Allana’s sister, is in love with Nevin. She is the exact opposite of Allana and is noticed by Nevin after Allana begins a knitting business. Other characters involved in this book are: Kendrick, Gavin, Munro, Catherine and Leann. These characters round out this wonderful story of twists and turns which decide everyone’s HEA.
The novel was well written with some twists and turns. There was adventure, love, sorrow, and the characters were well explained in their differences. Two sisters just the opposite and find love in their own time and way. I loved the part of the knitting needle project and how it helped the tenants who worked for the Lairds and the love that was shown by Allana. I am an ARC reader but I did buy the novel before it was offered to me so my opinion didn't reflect that of an ARC reader. I do love her novels and read them for pleasure.
It just goes to show you, first impressions are not always right......but if you follow your heart, at least in this story, all will work out in the end.....even if it is a bumpy road full of twists and turns to get there. This is not a high adventure tale, but one that steadily marches on carrying the reader through unexpected events to at least two happy endings and a tee up for a subsequent tale. It is well written, well delivered and highly worth your time. Enjoy!
Highlander's Burning is another great book by Alisa Adams. This one is a sensuous historical romance with courage, action, romance, strong emotions and twists. Likable characters, with deep friendships and a villain getting his dues. Alisa has a way of grabbing you the fist few pages and then you can't put the book down until the end.I received as an ARC book in exchange for an honest review.â€
Fantastic book, excellently written, sexy. Three strong sexy Highland Lairds and the women who win their hearts. This book is filled with heartbreak, not and love. This is a book that if you like Scottish Medieval romances you will love this book. I started this book and could not put it down until I was finished. I hope you enjoy it also.
