I have never given a book a bad review before and have always hated reading negative reviews with nonconstructive criticism. That being said it will be hard to be positive about this one as I feel like I have been taken. I am one of those guys that when I get into a hobby I read every book I can and although much of the reading is redundant I always learn something new. I did not learn anything from this book it is hands down the worse book purchase ever. With all the pointless pictures it took me about 45 minutes to read.This book does not give you the information you need to make jerky, the author goes on about selecting knives and butchering animals things you don't need to really know which would be fine but he seems to stop half way every process leaving you without the understanding.This book is filled with pictures one or two on every page. The problem is over half are pictures measuring the ingredients and piles of meat without any illustration that actually teaches you anything. I think one picture of using a measuring cup or showing what a pile of meat looks like would suffice but there are an average of about 1.5 per page. If I wanted to see a picture of a Bradley smoker I could see it on their website and I am not sure why they would not talk about different smokers on the market. The author uses a full page to show you what the outside of a Bradley looks like and does not show you how to use a smoker or load the jerky etc. This is kind of like a kids picture book and the information could have easily be fit into a 5 page pamphlet without the pictures, they are clearly used to up the page count not to teach you how to make jerky. There are web pages with better information you can print out.Again I hate to be negative but this guy took my ten dollars and I can find no redeeming qualities to this incomplete and scattered picture book, it is anything but complete.

In the mid-to-later part of the 20th century there are numerous rich events that shaped history.A thousand of then involved diplomatic events that had a major impact on world stability. Hundreds of those were interesting enough that some enterprising writer might endeavor to write a book with soup-to-nuts detail with an eye toward not academics, but the casual reader. This is one.Peter Carlson jumped into it, and for a baby boomer, this is a must read. I am a bit of a later baby boomer for whom the "duck and cover" had been long since abandoned when I was a kid, but as luck would have it, I became huge history buff of the era.For fans of history, and of excellent writing, this is a stone-cold winner. The story was told in a light-hearted manner, in a mood that unfortunately few people experienced in real time. In those days, the world could end at any minute. Now we don''t have to pay much attention to the skies, as it takes you to a period when terrible things were less likely to happen. The world was much more stable, as there seemed to be only two entities capable of doing major damage, and each knew that they had mankind in their purview.I also appreciated the epilogue, which was respectful of all but sufficiently brief.

So fun. This historical account of Khrushchev's visit to the US in the late 1950s puts a humorous spin on the Cold War. Not that the threat of nuclear holocaust wasn't serious, but having grown up in those times, and now looking back at the political posturing, the protocol, the elbowing and bombast recorded in the newspapers of the time, I found it delightful. Comments by gossip columnists, diplomats, and movie stars highlight the tour through the United States by this scary man who once was the stuff of the nightmares of serious children. Puts things in perspective and gives me hope that maybe in 50 years, we'll look back on the Era of Terror and find a little bit to smile at.

Loved this book.What's not to love?America during the height of the cold war entertaining the Kremlin's most dangerous, yet entertaining clown.Laughs galore until the hilarious climax describing the famous UN shoe incident of 1960.Gets real sad after that describing his being deposed by Brezhnev in '64 and forced into an obscure and heart rending retirement where, according to his grandson, he spent most of his time crying. :'(Communism is an almost unspeakable evil in practice but it's leader's clownish antics were also uproariously hilarious during his two historical visits to the home of his sworn capitalist arch enemies.This book captures, in a spirited, light hearted fashion all his amusing stunts and irreverent buffoonery!

During the height of the cold war Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev spent two madcap weeks exploring 1959 America--kissing babies, hobnobbing with Hollywood stars, touring factories, and setting off riotous media stampedes in an Iowa cornfield and a San Francisco Quality Foods supermarket. Fortunately, Peter Carlson chronicles the whole ridiculous but revealing episode in K Blows Top, a window into the world as it was not so long ago. Khrushchev was alternately charismatic, infuriating, hot-headed, warm-hearted, wily and artless, and Americans were mesmerized in spite of themselves, fascinated, frightened and charmed.While this is one of the funniest books I've read for a while, Carlson doesn't neglect the serious side of the story. Whatever goodwill was generated by Khrushchev's visit was lost when the Soviets shot down an American U-2 spy plane in a mission that President Eisenhower only reluctantly approved. Both sides were angered and went into face-saving mode, ruining a multi-leader summit hosted by France's wryly frustrated Charles De Gaulle and leading to Khrushchev's UN shoe banging tantrum and the Cuban missile crisis. As Carlson presents him, Khrushchev is a temperamental conundrum who nevertheless brought real reform to the Soviet government after the bloody excesses of Stalin, as Khrushchev's own bloodless ousting by Leonid Brezhnev ironically proves.

Fascinating read. Highly recommend it for anyone interested in not only Deaf culture but also diversity and minority groups in the US. It's eye-opening. The only thing they may have missed, probably because the book was written in 1990, is how social media and the internet has revolutionized Deaf culture for millennials.

Padden is a great writer and she explains the Deaf community very well, easy for anyone to understand. I am Deaf myself and she is one of my all-time favorites. She is really well-spoken and we hold her in high esteem in our culture.

Love it. I bought this book to help myself learn asl for a guy I started talking to recently who is deaf. I want to communicate with him in other ways, not just text.

As someone who has been involved with ASL and Deaf culture for a relatively long time (I took ASL1 in 1991... I'm now a teacher and interpreter), I find this book worth every page. Perfectly comprehensive and very well organized. A lovely read.

I bought this book for my Deaf Culture class and it was an enjoyable read. This felt more like a storybook, a more lax of a read compared to other books about Deaf Culture. I feel like this book is very introductory. I agree with the reviews that this is more experience than informative.Regardless, it is a great introduction to anyone interested in Deaf Culture, however this should not be the last book you read about Deaf culture.

I had a hard time reading this book. I actually only made it about 20 pages in and realized this wasn't what I was looking to read. If this is your type of book it seem pretty informative but I found I had to reread the same sections over repeated. I recommend getting the sample section to read before purchasing. This is the perfect example of why looking at a book in the bookstore before purchasing is a great idea. Not what I needed.

This is the book that every person interested in Deaf Culture should read, in my opinion. Its short, very readable, and brave.In fact, given the short attention span of some folks, I'll say just read chapter's 2 and 3. You'll be a smarter and better personfor it.

I read this book right after reading "A Journey Into the Deaf-World" by Lane, Hoffmeister, Bahan. The first three chapters of this are excellent, even illuminating. They show the misperceptions of both hearing on Deaf and Deaf on hearing worlds. These insights are most useful to those of us relatively on outside of Deaf culture.The remaining chapters didn't do much for my reading. There seemed to be a momentum letdown half way through that continued to the end. The "motel joke" at the end was precious exhibit of how Deaf do not understand the hearing world's meanings that culturally we attach to various sounds, especially those in eating and public bathroom environments.

Carly Gelsinger’s memoir, “Once You Go In”, is so personal, so well-written, and so immediate, that I was empathizing with her story from day one. Being a party to her journey into, through, and ultimately beyond the church was a rare experience.Experiencing the indoctrination, the institutionalized brainwashing, and “holy” judgement of the Assembly of God church through the mind of a growing young woman—with all her awkward sensitivity—makes for a powerful read. It all shines a bright light on the attractions of, and the need for spirituality in our lives. Gelsinger’s voice is excellent: she refrains from commenting on events with a “hindsight is 20/20”adult voice, and narrates her experiences only with her age-appropriate thoughts from the time. Any other technique would have lessened the impact.

This book takes you on a deep dive of both the universal longing of adolescents for love and belonging, as well as the nuances of how religious fundamentalism folds young people relentlessly into the system. The narrative is gripping and chilling, keeping you turning the pages to discover what comes next.Yet it's more than a story, but a peeling back of a curtain to reveal the intricacies of how toxic ideologies take root in people's minds, and grow into subcultures that end up shaping society and politics at large. Turns out the best way to get informed of the modern current of our common life together is to see it through the eyes of a young woman seeking the desires of her heart.

Once You Go In tells the story of Carly Gelsinger's transformation from lonely child to radicalized evangelical. Gelsinger captured what one imagines as the true voice of her teenage self, writing in language that’s simple, but not simplistic. She paints a vivid picture of life as she knew it, describing places and people so well, you’re there with her. The memoir dives deeply into emotions and answers readers’ questions: Why did she stay in the church as long as she did? Who helped along the way? What did she learn about herself? I looked forward every night to returning to Gelsinger’s story, often gasping and laughing out loud at the outrageous events she brought to life (the snot waterfall - oh, my!). The memoir is a must-read for anyone involved in a charismatic church, or anyone considering joining one. While the narrator’s tone is non-judgemental, this story illustrates how children can be manipulated into doing just about anything in the name of a deity. Once You Go In is a powerful story told well.

Dealing with church wounds can be difficult and Gelsinger shows the reader a striking image of herself as a young woman growing up in a fundamentalist church tucked away in the hills. She shows us her faith, her radicalization, and the painful process of learning how to leave it behind while not hating religion itself.

Gelsinger writes, as other reviewers have said, with honesty. But she also writes with something like compassion: for her former awkward teenage self; for those around her who are desperately seeking meaning; and by extension, by everyone who has ever lost themselves trying to find themselves. I found her account oddly comforting, having wished as a teen I could have "fit in" with the Youth Group kids, being able to see myself in her. But I suspect that every reader will, whether they've joined a spooky borderline cult or not.READ IT. You won't be able to put it down. And if you're a liberal, you might come out of it with a more balanced understanding of the religious right--not because they're correct (or not corrupt), but because they're as wounded as the rest of us.

It's rare that I enjoy a book so much that I race through it in a couple of days. But Gelsinger's writing style is so engaging, it's like listening to a close friend tell a juicy story. And her story is pretty juicy, though not in salacious way. It's a coming-of-age tale about a lonely home schooled girl in a small town who was looking for somewhere to belong. Unfortunately out of her limited choices, she joined a church that was so demanding of her time and so controlling of her behavior that it was basically a cult. It is endearing how the author is very revealing about her naïveté regarding religious fundamentalism and social situations (especially dating). I think this would be a great book for teenagers who could relate.

Wow. Wow. Wow. Powerful. I finished this book in less than 24 hours, I could not put it down— She really opens the door to the special brand of pain, heartache, and manipulation that a church environment can bring. Painfully, truthfully, and wistfully, she weaves this coming of age memoir. I felt so known reading this book— like maybe I wasnt the only one in church who struggled. Breathtakingly beautiful.

As the author delves into her youth and the culture of Fundamentalist Christianity, her honesty and storytelling ability kept me spellbound. I couldn't put the memoir down. I never would have guessed this was a first novel. I felt like I was right there living though the experience with her. I can't wait to see what the author writes next! PS This is my first-ever so you know it was good!
