My 10 year old daughter wanted to learn chess. After she knew the basics, I was looking for something to keep her interested. I thought chess problems would do it. This book just fit our needs.Great for beginners or intermediate players

Three stars might be too generous, but the content is very good. What took away two stars and almost a third is the size of the diagrams. They are FAR too small (not at all comparable to the size of diagrams in other tactics book), which really reduces the effectiveness this could have had for training. It's one mistake, but it's huge.

I am a class B player who used this book to broaden my knowledge of short, simple tactical motifs, and to improve my ability to quickly recognize these simple motifs through repetition in practice. Most of the exercises in the first half of the book were much too simple for a class B player, but the exercises in the latter half of the book required a little thought, on the order of 5 to 15 seconds to solve. None of the exercises in this book were overly challenging to me, but I saw some new (to me) and somewhat tricky tactical patterns. One thing I particularly liked about the book was the wide variety of tactical motifs presented and the amount of repetition of these motifs (enough repetition to make the concept stick, but not too much so as to bore the reader). This book is probably too basic for a class B player, but I did get the practice I wanted and it took very little time to complete the book.I generally agree with the points made by Mr. Falter, who does a good job of accurately describing the contents of the book and its virtues. I give this book 5 stars because (1) it contains 1001 accurate tactical exercises, appropriately arranged by category and order of difficulty; and (2) a wide range of tactical motifs are presented with an appropriate amount of repetition. This book would be very useful tactics practice for beginning to low-intermediate chessplayers.

My boyfriend is just learning chess and I bought this book for him. He finds it very helpful.

I have spent some time in NYC before but had always been with a city resident and hadn't ever needed a guide. But when the opportunity came about for my husband and I to spend a long weekend there, I absolutely took it. I love the city (in small doses, couldn't ever live there), but hadn't ever had a chance to do any touristy stuff. So I read some reviews and picked up this guide.I spent a few days reading over it, and after my trip, I would say it's a great guide if you don't know what you want to do, or how to structure your days, because it has very specific suggestions for stuff like that. It has a section for each part of the city, at the end of which is a run down on a sample day one could spend in that neighborhood.But as far as a comprehensive while-you're-there guide? I wish I had gotten Not For Tourists. This was a great planner, and had street and subway maps that were incredibly useful, but when you're looking for a bookstore nearby to kill an hour? Nada. Also, because of the setup of the book (chock full of Top Ten lists, duh), it jumps around a lot. One museum is mentioned in four different places, and vital information is only on one of those pages, but from the index there's no way to tell which one of those pages has something important like the hours of the place, for example, so you have to check every page.Again, great for planning, less great for a carry-along for your trip.

I visited NYC for the first time a few weeks ago. I took only three books about this city with me: this guide, the "Lonely planet NYC Guide", and "The Metropolitan Museum of Art Guide". Truth to be told, this guide is probably the only one I couldn't have done without."Top 10 New York" is an extremely useful small guide that doesn't have as much information as the "Lonely planet NYC Guide", but that has the essentials, and excellent fold out maps in color that are more easily understandable than those of other guides. I would like to highlight the fact that even though I am very absent minded, I could easily find my way in NYC thanks to those maps. And if I can, everybody will be able to do that!From my point of view, this guide is ideal for those tourists that don't have a lot of time, and want to see as much as possible during their visit to NYC (specifically Manhattan), if possible without a tourist guide. "Top 10 New York" points out quite a few places you simply must go to in the city, but also tells you about different neighbourhoods, and their history. There are many photos in color that help you to decide what you want to do, and historic data that allows you to learn about this city.Moreover, most visitors will find the insider tips for tourists helpful, and the planned walks and itineraries a good option. For those traveling to New York City this is an essential guide to bring with you. The restaurant recommendations are top notch. The maps are detailed and a pocket subway guide is always helpful. Whether you are going in for a week or a weekend this is the guide you want to carry with you when you are out and about. You may want to use another guide if you are going in for a longer period of time for planning purposes but again this is the one you want to carry with you when you are in the city.

If you are going to be in New York City this is a great book to have. It is thorough and covers all of the areas you would want to see. The recommendations for hotels and restaurants are top notch. It includes an excellent subway map and has been useful on countless trips to the city.

This is the original version of the book Windy Poplars. Some of her publishers had her change the name and some of the story because it was too dark? Of course I had to have this version to see what they were talking about and??? they were crazy??? This book is perfectly in keeping with the other Anne of Green Gables books. There's nothing too dark or morbid or graphic in here at all. Maybe they objected to her strolling through a graveyard but? that happens in like half the series! I think in every single place Anne lived the author pointed out the graveyard. Good grief, in Rainbow Valley there's children that play in one on a regular basis! And the name is totally not ripping off Wind in the Willows like they thought either. As if we would confuse an Anne of Green Gables novel with one about personified river wildlife. All in all this is a great addition to the series, and this version was not easy to find either!

As much as I've enjoyed Anne of Green Gables, Anne of Avonlee and Anne of the Island this is simply better. I didn't read these as a child ( being male) but have just began a variety of Lucy Maude Montgomery's books. I have found them delightfully enjoyable. While the characters have been rich, generally delightful and situations well crafted she has reach another level in Anne of Windy Poplars. They are still engaging and delightful but now are more emotionally drawn. Anne still Anne it's those around her that have grown in richness.

Anne of Windy Poplars continues the story of Anne. She is engaged to be married, and has accepted the position of Principal of the school at Summerside while she waits for her fiancé to finish medical school so they can be married. Anne's sweet disposition and usual cheerful nature assure her happiness wherever she finds herself. Although she is a little homesick for Avonlea and Green Gables, she makes the most of her time in Summerside, making new friends and winning over potential enemies.

I am leaving a review about the hardcover binding of this book, since there are so many great reviews of my favorite in the Anne series, Windy Poplars, and because Amazon does not separate the reviews by bindings. I would have LOVED to have read a review about this particular hardcover binding! It is not a traditional hardcover; it is a cheap paperback glued to a cheap hard cover. This does not mean it is not attractive, because it is attractive - at least, more attractive than a plain ol' paperback. It means it will not wear any better than the cheap mass market paperbacks they print up these extended serials as. There are no quality printings of the whole series, and I've LOOKED! I'm not sorry I ordered this copy, despite the fact it was nearly $14, because my mass market paperback copy of Windy Poplars was shot, and I didn't want another of the same. As critical as I am of the cheap binding of the hardcover, I am inwardly hoping that it will hold up a LITTLE longer than the plain ol' paperback, but, time will tell.

"Anne of Windy Poplars" is the excellent fourth book in the "Anne of Green Gables" series by Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery. It finds Anne Shirley, fresh from college, working as principal and teacher at the Summerside High School on Prince Edward Island. This book is the American version of Montgomery's original novel "Anne of Windy Willows."Anne takes a room at Windy Poplars, an old house with character in Summerside, owned by two eccentric widows and kept by their gloriously opinionated cook and maid, Rebecca Dew. Next door is a neglected and lonely child named Elizabeth Grayson. The town is run by the prideful Pringle clan, and Anne's fellow teacher at Summerside is the antagonistic Katherine Brooke. These people and others will engage Anne's time and energy over the course of the book, and it is a tribute to this Anne that she works some magic on all of them.This Anne of Windy Willows is worth knowing. She is a mature, attractive young woman with a degree and a good heart, increasingly conscious of her ability to affect the lives of others, and still vested with some of the fiestiness of her younger self. With increasing confidence and sometimes with unintended and hilarious results, Anne will set out to change Summerside for the better.For those who complain that the young Anne of Green Gables disappeared in her later married days, here is a fine novel about her days as an independent woman, and what she accomplished. "Anne of Windy Poplars" was added into the Anne series by an older Montgomery, and the narrative contains some foreshadowings of Anne's life to come. Highly recommended to fans of the "Anne of Green Gables" series.

Yet another pleasant Anne story. In this one we see her out in the world, working at her first job and running into various challenges. I don't think there is an LM Montgomery book that I haven't enjoyed, and this one is no exception.

Gran libro!, excelente prosa , un viaje a la época . Leonardo da Vinci , un genio, lleno de anécdotas y situaciones particulares que hacen interesante su paso por la vida. Me gusto su capacidad de cuestionamiento , su capacidad de observar lo que otros no veían, su interés por la perfección , su capacidad de generar proyectos. Felizmente , le gustaba escribir y tomar notas de sus experimentos e ideas , su legado sobrevive en toda su amplitud gracias a esta cualidad de este genio.

Esta biografia escrita por Isaacson, es una de las mejores que lei de todas sobre Leonardo da Vinci.
