I was a freshman at Marshall on Nov. 14, 1970 and in fact arrived at the crash site before many of the first responders, having heard of the crash on a police band radio. I didn't know any of the players, but being a Huntingtonian I knew many of the fans. As a Marshall supporter and benefactor, I also got to know many of the post-crash administrators in the athletic department and Old Main.I came to know Red Dawson personally and professionally in the 1980s when he entered the construction business, the same business I was in at the time. Although our paths cross less frequently now, I still consider him a friend.I noticed a change in Red for a period in the late 80s and until reading this book I didn't realize the struggles he was enduring. Of the many conversations Red and I had, only the first few included the plane crash and rebuilding. After that, over the years our conversations were always on business, family, or the lighter subjects of country music, golf, and beer.Like talking to Red, reading this book is easy. Straight forward, folksy, funny, and with no fancy words taken from a thesaurus intended only to impress you. Red is indeed the consummate Good Ole Boy, but with a sensitive side. He is also humble, sometimes to a fault. In typical Red style he omits from his book the many acts of generosity he routinely performed for his friends and the community, such as when he lengthening the soccer and football practice fields over old 21st Street in the late 1990s for little or no compensation from the university. In addition to revealing Red Dawson the man, this book is so much of an insider's view of the crash and post-crash era that even an insider like me learned something on every page. I recommend it highly.

I was very young when the Marshall plane crash happened and I don't really remember anything about it firsthand. But I was a Marshall student for 5 1/2 years, and I know that the plane crash and its aftermath have never completely faded from memory at Marshall and in Huntington. I hope that the victims are always remembered with a memorial service at the fountain. Like many people, I watched the WE ARE MARSHALL movie (more than once), and I thought it was deeply moving. But this book by Red Dawson tells a very personal, detailed and touching account of the Marshall team before, during and after the time of the crash. It also tells his personal struggles that lasted for many years after the crash. He gives details that the movie would never be able to share, and he does it in a very personal and easily relatable way. I love the conversational way this book is written, and I feel that Mr. Dawson has done a wonderful job telling about his experiences. As a Marshall fan forever, I am very thankful that Mr. Dawson was willing and able to share with others not only his suffering, but the ways that he was able to be victorious over it.

Red Dawson was an All-American at Florida State , played in the NFL wth the Patriots and assistant football coach for Marshall University. Tragedy happened on November 14, 1970 . Red was the only surviving Marshall coach .After the ‘72 season Red Dawson decided to leave his love of football . Some believed a classic case of survivors guilt . When tragedy, serious illness or death strikes suddenly everything changes . Pain will change you more profoundly than success or good fortune. Suffering shapes your perception of life , your values , priorities, goals and dreams . Red Dawson decided to leave a football career and start Red Dawson Construction Company in Huntington. There is therapy when a person works with their hands . Through the use of the hands , a person is energized by mind and will and can influence the state of their mental health . It is interesting that Red Dawson Construction was part of the 2004 urban renewal project of downtown Huntington with the building of Pullman Square that faces Harris Riverfront Park on the banks of the Ohio River . He is a oil painter of mainly nature scenes . His artwork is displayed in many Huntington Art galleries. Finally , The writing of this book ended his painful years of survivors guilt . Stephen Golden , Marshall 1972-1976 Alumnus

Red Dawson's story of his own painful rebirth after the Marshall plane crash in 1970 is the story of recovery and rebirth for Marshall football, the university itself, and the whole community of Huntington. Well done, Red.

I worked at Marshall University as a secretary for Dr. Bernard Queen in Elementary Education when the tragedy occurred. My heart breaks for Coach Dawson and all that he had to deal with after the tragedy. God Bless you Coach Dawson.

Great book, I hope many people read it and enjoy it as I have. Many years ago I tried to remind Red that he coached two years, but he couldn’t get it. Now I know why. I am amazed at how accurate this book is and how much it fills in things I never knew as a player.

I grew up with Bill Dawson in Valdosta, GA. I just finished "A Coach in Progress," and I loved it. I vividly remember reading the "Stars and Stripes" account of the Marshal tragedy as I neared the end of my second Vietnam tour. There were no survivor names in the article, and I worried that my old friend was on the plane. As I read Bill's book, I could feel his emotions. There are lessons to be learned in the book, and I strongly recommend it ... especially for anyone who has experienced "survivor guilt."

Excellent book! Extremely interesting & amazing personal story of heartbreak, grief & finally working through to find peace after years & years.
